Ron Gilbert – Monkey Island

Monkey island is a game created by Ron Gilbert and published by LucasArts and released in 1990. Monkey island are a series of games that are all related to each other story wise. the series titles that were released are called  Monkey island 2 Lechuck’s Revenge, The Curse Of Monkey Island, Escape From Monkey Island, Tales Of Money Island and Monkey Island Special edition Collection. For this blog I will be focusing on the very first game created “The Secret Of Monkey Island”.

The Secret Of Monkey Island is a story about a character Guybrush Threepwood who wants to become  part of a pirate gang. To prove that Guybrush is worth off pirate material he must impress 3 pirate captains and he is given challenges and tasks. On one of the mission’s you come across a woman named Elaine Marley where Guybrush falls in love with her. While Guybrush falls hopelessly in love he does not realises that a rival pirate called LeChuck who is a ghost captain. When LeChuck kidnaps Elanie, Guybrush and his crew track down his ship and defeat LeChucks and getting his love back into his life.

The gameplay of Monkey island is very unusual to me as the movement of the character is a 2D scrolling game but the background looks very 3D as you can see in the screen shot. below. After watching a gameplay video on Youtube the controls did look very basic and easy to understand. The game looks like fun to play because of its pirate humor. Another thing which I really did like was be the choice of options that you can get Guybrush to say to another character you meet in the game. I did not like the look of the combat style to the game for me the scene just went on for to long and personality I did not like how you could not control your sword fighting, it is just a matter of selecting what text you would like to say and then watching an animation of two characters sword fight, it became very repetitive
